SUMMARY:Community Engagement at Scale: NSF Centers of Expertise
DESCRIPTION:Community Engagement at Scale: NSF Centers of Expertise\n\nMar
inshaw, Crawford, Deelman, Schopf, Welch...\n\nSummary: This panel brings
together the leaders of centers of expertise serving the CI and NSF commun
ities to present what they wish everyone knew about their respective area
and to explore the challenges and lessons learned with the cross-cutting t
opic of community engagement at scale.\n\nModerator: Ruth Marinshaw, CTO f
or Research Computing at Stanford University and leader of the Stanford Re
search Computing Center\n\nTime: 90 minutes preferred, 60 minutes if reque
sted.\n\nWhat do science gateways, network performance, molecular science,
cybersecurity operations, distributed computing and cyberinfrastructure d
evelopment have in common? They are all domains that are the focus of cent
ers of expertise funded by NSF to serve the community. They bring together
teams with expertise in technical domains and community engagement with t
he goal of doing community engagement at scale broadly across the science
community.\nThis panel brings together the leaders of these centers to pre
sent what they wish everyone knew about their respective area and to discu
ss the challenges and lessons learned with the cross-cutting topic of comm
unity engagement at scale.\n\nBenefits of the panel include:\n>Disseminati
ng knowledge about community engagement to the community and to other and
future projects.\n>Capture and advance our shared knowledge about communit
y engagement.\n>Build the community’s awareness of the centers of expertis
e and their value.\n>Entertaining discussion around differences of perspec
tive from the centers.\n\nThe agenda for the panel will be:\n\n1. Each spe
aker presents for <5 minutes on (1) what they wish everyone knew about the
ir respective area, and (2) what are the biggest surprises they have learn
ed in community engagement?\n\n2. A moderated discussion which:\n\n>Explor
es the similarities and differences in the presented surprises.\n>Explores
what relationships should exist at the international, national level (wit
h other centers, big CI projects, and NSF itself), with regional networks,
and at the state and institutional levels.\n>Explores the needs of the ta
rget communities and how they can be met by the centers.\n>Explores the ch
allenges and opportunities of developing CI workforce.\n\nDifferentiation
from similar offerings: This is a unique opportunity to present the commun
ity-driven efforts around developing centers that aim to enhance the natio
 nal cyberinfrastructure.\n\nPanel\nPanel
