SUMMARY:Developing and Operating Edge Services on Federated Infrastructure
  Using MiniSLATE
DESCRIPTION:Developing and Operating Edge Services on Federated Infrastruc
ture Using MiniSLATE\n\nBreen, Gardner, McKee, Stidd, Weaver...\n\nModern
software development workflow patterns often involve the use of a develope
r’s local machine as the first platform for testing code. SLATE mimics thi
s paradigm with an implementation of a light-weight version, called MiniSL
ATE, that runs completely contained on the developer's local machine or sc
ales to larger machines (laptop, virtual machine, or another physical serv
er). MiniSLATE resolves many development environment issues by providing a
n isolated and local configuration for the developer. Application develope
rs are able to download MiniSLATE which provides a fully orchestrated set
of containers on top of a production SLATE platform, complete with central
information service, API server, and a local Kubernetes cluster. This ap
proach mitigates the overhead of a hypervisor but still provides the requi
site isolated environment. They are able to create the environment, iterat
e, destroy it, and repeat at will. A local MiniSLATE environment also allo
ws the developer to explore the packaging of the edge service within a con
strained security context in order to validate its full functionality with
in limited permissions. As a result, developers are able to test the funct
ionality of their application with the complete complement of SLATE compon
ents local to their development environment without the overhead of buildi
ng a cluster or virtual machine, registering a cluster, interacting with t
he production SLATE platform, etc.\n\nPaper\nFacilitation, Technical Paper
